Let us seize and hold tightly the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is reliable and trustworthy and faithful [to His word].
Hebrews 10 v 23
Have you ever been on a rollercoaster ride where the attendant shouts, "Hold on tight," and you've gripped the safety bar so hard it made your knuckles go white?
Or have you faced a medical procedure where you've ended up squeezing someone's hand so ferociously that your fingers go numb and you get pins and needles?
Or perhaps you've been rock climbing and found yourself hanging on so tightly because the precariousness of your position means one wrong move could be very dangerous indeed?
Here the writer to the Hebrews encourages us to hold on to hope with this same kind of determination and intensity. However, we are not being instructed to just live expectantly without surety but rather why we can and should hold tightly is clearly clarified, for he who promised is reliable and trustworthy and faithful.
When we physically hold on tightly there is certainly hope that whatever or whoever we're clinging to won't let us down, yet sadly there is no guarantee. However, the assurance for the confession of our hope we have is nothing less than the faithfulness of God, which is evidenced through his-story throughout the Bible, ultimately personified in Jesus - whose one for all sacrifice means we can confidently draw near to God - and testified to by billions of believers across centuries, continents and cultures.
I was recently challenged to consider again just exactly how awesome this guarantee is by an extract of a sermon called "That's My King" by Dr S. M. Lockridge. Lockridge passionately declares the character and nature of our God and, as you listen to his description, I pray that you too will be stirred to declare "That's My King - the one in whom all my hope is found."
You might also like to listen to the song "Jesus will still be there..." as a beautiful reminder that His faithfulness is such that whatever happens our hope in Him is guaranteed.
Jesus will still be there
His love will never change
Sure as the steady rain
Jesus will still be there
When no one else is true
He'll still be loving you
When it looks like you've lost it all
And you haven't got a prayer
Jesus will still be there

So let us hold on tightly, "For I am the Lord, I do not change."
