Remember

It’s Saturday.

For the disciples, locked in together during the Sabbath unable to travel or work, all they could do was sit and remember.

Remember that Jesus was gone. That he’d died horribly and they weren’t really sure why. It had happened so quickly. One minute they are eating and praying together and the next- he’s been seized, tried, condemned, tortured and killed.

Remember that they had fled, denied him and scattered, only finding each other to witness his death as a criminal.

Remember that they had such plans for the future. And oh what a future! With Jesus, the future had seemed so glorious as he taught about a new way of living and loving each other.

Remember that they had witnessed and performed miracles. No one could take that away from them. But what was the point, now they were left on their own?

The rules of the Sabbath may have kept them together, but it was Jesus that had chosen each one and bound them together closer than brothers. They remembered their individual invitations, laughed and cried as they told tales from their travels and whispered of their worries that they too were in danger from the authorities. Perhaps they quoted scripture from the psalms or from Jesus’ teaching.

A day of mourning, on a day they were forbidden to do anything else but worship.

A day of sorrow, less than a week since they entered Jerusalem to songs of praise.

A day of fear, because what would happen now he was dead?

It’s Saturday and for the disciples the future was unclear, but for us, we can remember God’s plan was greater than they could ever imagine.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart;

do not depend on your own understanding.

Seek his will in all you do,

and he will show you which path to take.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)
