Lay It Down - Psalm 55:22

God with us - Week 44: Psalm 55:22

God is with you when those you thought you could trust break your heart and let you down. That's the message of this week's verse. If anyone is reading this while facing the betrayal of a loved one, then I hope these words bring you comfort. I may not know your name, but I'll be praying for you this week.

Discovering that everything you knew isn't what you thought it was, is devastating.

If that sounds like a confusing sentence, well, that's what it feels like when something like this hits. It shakes the foundations of every relationship and every certainty you thought you knew.

In Psalm 55, David was in that exact situation as he shared the pain of betrayal.

20 I was betrayed by my friend, though I lived in peace with him.

While he was stretching out his hand of friendship,

he was secretly breaking every promise he had ever made to me!

21 His words were smooth and charming.

Yet his heart was disloyal and full of hatred—

his words soft as silk while all the time scheming my demise.

Psalm 55:20-21 (TPT)

As always, there's much speculation about the betrayer's identity, but there's no confusion about the pain he brought into David's life.

David laughed with this man, shared meals with him, and spoke of his plans for the future.

They were close.

Promises were made and trust was established, but when the truth came out David was devastated. It's clear in this Psalm that David was struggling, but as always he didn’t hide from what he was feeling.

What I love about David (and have mentioned numerous times in previous blogs) is that he knew where to direct all the hurt. If ever there was an example of someone who fully understood God's presence in every aspect of their life, then it's David.

Even when he was hurting, David knew God was there.

Even when he was in pain, he looked to God to help him grow through the experience.

And, then in Psalm 55, David shared what he had learned with us.

So here's what I've learned through it all:

Leave all your cares and anxieties at the feet of the Lord,

and measureless grace will strengthen you.

Psalm 55:22 (TPT)

I might not have quite the same spiritual clout as David, but I understand the pain shared in this Psalm.

Like David, I can say…

So here's what I've learned through it all:

Even when it hurts, keep bringing every care, worry, angry thought, painful memory, or anxious moment and lay it down at the feet of Jesus.

It might not always feel like it, but God is with you.

He is there.

It may take time, but as the days pass and you begin to heal, He will strengthen you with His measureless grace.
