Most of us still have our minds on Christmas but the New Year is just around the corner! Each year people make resolutions to lose weight, give up smoking, spend more time with the kids or spend less time on their phones. It's a time for fresh starts and new beginnings...but old habits usually return by the end of January (if not before).
The final session of Storyline, Glug, is all about new beginnings.
17 “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the old skins would burst from the pressure, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine is stored in new wineskins so that both are preserved.”
Matthew 9:14-17
Wine was kept in goatskins and their repetitive use caused the skin to stretch and crack. New wine expands as it ferments and if it was placed in an old wineskin then the capacity for growth was restricted. As the wine expanded, the old wineskin would stretch until it reached bursting point. The new wine was lost as the wineskin could no longer hold it.
So often we try to cling onto what is old and familiar when God is trying to do something new and exciting. Each element of the Storyline teaching should stir in us a desire to grow and move forward in our spiritual journey. God is the creator. He doesn't want our faith to remain stagnant, never changing, always the same. He wants to do something exciting and new.
Maybe this year instead of resolving to do something new in your own strength, ask God to do something new in His!
"I am about to do something new.
See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?
I will make a path through the wilderness,
I will create rivers in dry lands."
Isaiah 43:18-10
