Day One - Mark 1

In the book of Mark there is a sense of urgency to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. The opening verse serves as a title for the gospel and, skipping the birth narrative included in the other synoptic gospels, Mark gets straight to business introducing the one who prepares the way for Jesus.

The prophet Isaiah had declared:

2 ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,

who will prepare your way’ –

3 ‘a voice of one calling in the wilderness,

“Prepare the way for the Lord,

make straight paths for him.”’

Mark 1:2-3 (NIV)

When John the Baptist burst onto the scene dressed in his unusual attire, with his interesting eating habits, he must have grabbed the attention of the people. Despite this, John’s main purpose was to point the way to Jesus.

‘After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptise you with water, but he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.’

Mark 1:7-8 (NIV)

Within the first chapter of Mark’s gospel Jesus’ ministry commences with his baptism, he is tempted by the devil in the desert and he calls his first disciples. By the end of the chapter we see snapshots of his ministry as he drives out an evil spirit, heals the sick and seeks out a place for solitary pray.

Something to think about…

  • What is “the good news”? How would you describe it to someone who doesn’t follow Jesus?

  • What is it about Jesus that makes you want to follow him?

  • How are you preparing the way for others to meet Jesus?
