Day 7: Let Jesus do the lifting

I find it hard to say “no”, and sometimes act out of guilt. When I do something purely because I have a sense of obligation, rather than through a passion that God has laid on my heart, it feels hard, burdensome, and draining.

Matthew 11:28-30 says,

‘come to me, all you who are weary...I will give you rest...my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’

When I act out of God’s grace, my Jesus does the heavy lifting.

The biblical analogy here is a farming one. It’s about ploughing fields, before tractors (hard work!) One ox pulls, the other goes where he leads. If the weaker one follows the stronger, his ploughing experience will be easy. If he tries to go his own way, things get really hard (and often painful), really fast.

That doesn’t mean that God won’t ask us to work hard, it just means that what he asks us to do, he will equip us for, and when He doesn’t ask us, it’s ok to say no!

Loving people, reaching others, changing the world: none of that is hard when we are yoked to Jesus and go where He leads us.
