Day 5: Leading Lines

27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel.

Philippians 1:27 (NIV)

All around, the world goes by.

Some days you find yourself just going through the motions.

Waking up, working, and if you’re lucky - sleeping, only to find yourself doing it all again.

We get caught up in the ‘busy’ness of life. Racing every which way, much like the photo above.

This is not the life God intended.

In December last year, after a busy day at University, I drove to the M62 but instead of going on it, I went on a bridge over it. Standing on the bridge, seeing all the cars zooming past, I was reminded of the need to step back and gain some perspective. Not just any perspective, but God’s perspective.

In the ‘busy’ness of life, in our cars zooming down the motorway, we often forget the bigger picture.

In photography, there is a concept called ‘leading lines’, it is the idea that there are lines in the picture which lead the viewers eye to the subject. Christmas is a very busy time, but in the ‘busy’ness of all that goes on – don’t forget the calling we have, reminded to us through Paul’s letter, of living a life ‘worthy of the gospel of Christ’.

So, this Advent season, simply reflect. Will your life be a ‘leading line’ to Christ’s birth or a distraction from the true focus?

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in his wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of his glory and grace.
